Pope’s Audience Hall – The tickets are free but not if you ask to be delivered!

If you require less than 10 tickets, the tickets can be picked at the “Bronze Door” from the Swiss Guards at St Peter’s Square between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The tickets can be collected just a day before, not earlier. You have up till 9.00 a.m. on the day of the Papal Audience/Pope Mass to pick up your tickets.
Easter Midnight Mass / Christmas Evening Mass require bookings 3 months or more in advance. You need to call your travel company if you require more than 10 tickets to reserve a spot.

Papal Blessings By The Pope On Sundays and Reciting The Angelus (Pope’s Audience Hall )

The Pope appears from the window of his apartment and gives a short speech. He greets the thousands of visitors gathered below St Peter’s Square in various languages.

Angelus
At noon, Every Sunday at the Vatican City, the Pope delivers his address. At the end of the address, the Pope recites the Angelus. The Angelus Is a Catholic devotional prayer commemorating the incarnation of Christ. After which the Pope blesses the crowds gathered at St peter’s Square and to the millions of viewers on watching on the television.

Papal Masses With The Pope (Papal Audience and Mass Tickets)

The masses with the Pope is celebrated at the Vatican in various places such as St Peter’s Square or St Peter’s Basilica. Depending on the type of celebration the masses may be celebrated in both locations. The masses are very popular and attended by Catholics and visitors from around the world.

St Peter’s Basilica – Papal Mass with the Pope

Most of the public worship masses a celebrated at St Peter’s Basilica. With a capacity to host up to 14,000 visitors, it is a favourite place to hold the people mess. If there is a larger number of people or if it is a significant religious occasion the masses are held at st peter’s Square. To be part of the Papal Mass, a ticket is required. The tickets are free, and there’s absolutely no charge. To view the Pope clearly, be prepared to arrive a few hours early. Due to airport-style security checks, you can expect delays.

St Peter’s Basilica – Papal Mass with the Pope Tickets Information

1-6 tickets

The tickets can be picked at the “Bronze Door” from the Swiss Guards at St Peter’s Square between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The tickets can be collected just a day before, not earlier. You have up till 9.00 a.m. on the day of the Papal Audience/Pope Mass to pick up your tickets. If you wish to attend the Easter or Christmas Eve Mass, you will need to book months in advance for availability.

6 tickets or more

You will need to book the tickets in advance, and they will need to be picked up a day before the mass from the Prefecture of the Papal Household.

Religious guests/VIP’s

This tickets allows for the special guest to be in a special section at the mass or a special event and can only up be applied through the church or a religious institution.

Tickets must be shown at the entrance and note that if the church or square is packed to capacity, you may be denied entry even if you have a ticket. You need to be there early.

St Peter’s Square – Papal Mass with the Pope Tickets Information

St Peter’s Square can accommodate up to 80,000 people you can either be seated all stand if you wish to stand, you do not require a ticket. Due to the popularity of the masses regardless of you purchase a ticket or not, you may be denied entry if the square is filled up to capacity. Therefore, you are requested to come a few hours earlier.
In the months of June July and August, Rome can get extremely hot due to summer. It is suggested that you bring water sunscreen and hats. As you will be passing through airport-style security, we recommend that you carry just a small bag or a small backpack. Objects such as knives, scissors, weapons and firearms are all banned. Please be mindful as there are thousands of people waiting to pass through security and you do not want to be the cause of delay!

Christmas Eve Midnight Mass and Easter Mass at St Peter’s Basilica

If you wish to attend the Easter mass or the Christmas Eve mass, you need to book at least 3 months in advance to secure your tickets. These special religious events are normally celebrated at St Peter’s Basilica. As there are many VIP guests in attendance, the capacity is limited.

How to secure tickets?

To attend either of these special masses, you need to fix your required tickets directly to the Vatican at least 2 to 6 months in advance. If you request a smaller number of tickets, you have a higher chance of securing them. If you have been successful in securing the tickets, you will receive a letter from the Vatican advising you where you can collect your tickets from. The tickets are only confirmed when you pick them up from the Prefecture office. All the instructions will be clearly listed in the letter. Please note, that when you go pick your tickets up from the office, there may be an occasion that due to lack of availability, you may not be able to receive your tickets. This cannot be confirmed any earlier.
If you are going to book more than 10 tickets, it is advisable to have a letter of recommendation from your local parish church by someone in authority accompanied by your request for the tickets.
The tickets are to be collected about 4 to 5 days before the event between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. depending on whether it’s summer or winter.

Top Tips For Papal Audience and Papal Masses (Pope’s Audience Hall )

  • The Papal Audience normally starts at 10:30 a.m., but in summer it can start at 10:00 a.m. before the heat of the day sets in.
  • People do arrive early as they want to secure their seats.
  • The security checks normally open between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. But note that there are long lines already waiting at the security checks. It is advisable to arrive earlier.
  • St Peter’s is the ideal summer location for the Papal Audience as it holds large crowds in its square. They are seating areas for ticket holders but there is still plenty of standing area for non-ticket purchasers.
  • If you have a ticket, it is a first come first served basis, so if you’re keen to sit right in the front you will need to arrive very early.
  • Summer is a busy time in the Vatican. Do not be disheartened if you are unable to arrive early or secure a ticket as it is still possible to stand and hear the proceedings over loudspeakers.

The Pope may be on a Pastoral visit overseas or around Italy or he may be at his summer holiday residence at Castel Gandolfo. ( This is normally in August and at that time, the Papal Audience will be halted. It is best to check the Vatican website as the Papal calendar is updated regularly.

Winter Papal Audience – Hall of Pope Paul VI (Pope’s Audience Hall )

The Hall of Pope Paul VI is where the Papal Audience is held in winter. Again, even if you have a ticket, please note that the hall can only accommodate up to a certain number of people and therefore you may be denied entry. The security checkpoint opens between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. in the morning.

Summer Papal Audience – Castel Gandolfo

Located one hour outside of Rome, Castel Gandolfo is there summer holiday residents of the Pope. The pope holds his Papal Audience in August till early September. If you are planning to catch a glimpse of the Pope there, it is highly recommended that you check the Vatican website as at times, there are last-minute changes and the Pope instead flies in a helicopter to meet visitors at the Vatican. You may want to consider a private car hire as it is not easy to get to Castel Gandolfo via public transport, although not impossible. ( You will need to allow for extra travel time to match the bus, train timings).
